...but not Writer Blahs, thank goodness! I broke 76K on Heart's Chalice and expect to hit 80K soon. I've got 100K as the benchmark for my little word count widget in my side bar, but truly, I don't know how long this story will be. The story will tell me. As long as the end result winds up between 70K and 100K, that's fine.
Also, a cool new plot line manifested itself for the latter fourth of the story. I'm excited about it! Again, my characters are pulling no punches about what they want to do, where they want to go, and it's for the best that I listen to them.
I'm having fun with the story, and when I get it rough-drafted, I'll be working extensively on revisions and polishing. I want this book to be something extra-special, hopefully (dare I even think it) my break-out novel.
Blogger blahs -- well, what can I say about that. I've been more interested in writing than in blogging lately. But I'm tossing interesting things around in my head -- perhaps I'll convert my short story blog into a Heart's Chalice blog, where I could post stories about my novel's characters and their world, stories which would lie outside the main action of the novel.
We've received serious rain off Tropical Depression Fay over the last few days, and it was most welcome. East Tennessee was getting close to drying up and blowing away! I haven't been on a hike since the rains came (I'm hoping to go tomorrow), but here are some pictures from my most recent hike (Monday):

And if I don't post here for a little while, no worries -- imagine me writing away on Heart's Chalice and hiking my little heart out in the mountains.

I hear ya on the blogging blahs. It's taking a great effort for me to keep it going...even the kitty blog. I'm even in a writing blah for my novel. I force myself to write short stories. At least I keep my mind fresh with new stories, new twist and turns.
I don't have a set of mountains to escape to. But I do through your pictures. Thanks for sharing them.
Good going HC.

Happy raindance, too.
Hi, Dorothy! :) Yeah, the short stories are a great idea. You're doing a super job with them!
I've got some blogging blahs with the kitty blogs, too. I love the Cat Blogosphere and intend to keep the Ballicus Blog going; I guess I'm just going through a bit of an energy conservation period, where I'm funneling so much of my efforts into my novel that other writing endeavors wear me out more. I guess it's like anything else; it runs in cycles. :) You and I have both been blogging for a while -- I bet we'll both pick up steam with it again.
And oh, those mountains -- I don't know what I'd do without them! :)
Great big bear hugs, my deer BFSCCPWB/KS -- and *grin*, I'm so glad my rain dance worked! ;)
I'm glad you're doing so well with the novel, and certainly I've gotten a lot out of writing supplemental stories to my novels. So has Susan, who will no doubt stop by to offer you similar encouragement. When a set of characters takes up more head space than you have novel space for, what else can you do?
I'm sorry you haven't been able to hike, but I know the rain is welcome. You're kind of in the position I was in last week, only you don't have a bike and trainer to serve as your backup exercise. Let me know if you ever want some pointers on that. ;-)
Hi, Bunnygirl! :) Yeah, I recall your exercise challenges of last week. A little bit of rain is one thing, but being monsooned on is quite another -- a soggy proposition, to say the least! :) But we were so glad for the rain. We definitely rolled out the red carpet for Fay around here.
The bike sounds great. In lieu of hiking today, I did some weightlifting. It felt good to pump iron!
I am thinking more and more about writing some Heart's Chalice "extras" once I get the thing rough-drafted. I think it would be fun, and in turn, it would feed into further revisions and polishing of the novel -- and into a possible second novel set in that world, too!
Bunny's right. You know where I stand on the extras issue. Loud and clear.
As for Fay, thank you for sending her my way. The rain is MUCH needed.
Thanks, Susan! :) Yeah, it's something I'm tossing around -- I think it would be good in many ways.
And I'm glad Fay has come calling! She was very welcome here, too -- East TN has been in severe to extreme drought conditions.
I like the idea of the Hearts Chalice blog. Tease us a little, why doncha?
I'm feeling the blogger blahs too... but for a different reason. My kids are driving me INSANE and I just really need summer holidays to be OVER.
NOW!
Your hiking forest is gorgeous, even without the rain. We're going camping this weekend and I hope the weather stays moderate (as it is now) so we can do some hiking.
hehe, my friend! Talk me into it, talk me into it! :)
If I wind up doing that, it'll probably be after I get the story rough-drafted. I'm getting closer all the time -- and this time I'm not gonna have to scrap what I've done and start over, thank GOODNESS!!! :-D
Have fun camping, and I hope you have great weather and get to go hiking. You'll love it! :)
Good for you for humming right along on Heart's Chalice. It sounds like your characters are not going to be willing to let you go.
I totally get the funnelling of energy. I've been working on freelance stuff for the past few days and haven't had much blogging energy left.
Yes, these characters have got their hooks in me deep! Even during periods of frustration (when I've had to scrap many pages or scrap everything and start over), they still tell me -- no, DEMAND -- that I not give up on them, that they won't let me! :)
That's great about the freelancing, Leah! Good luck with it. :)
I'm impressed that you're deeply involved in writing the story and getting a really great idea ... wait for it... for the very same story!
Usually it's the deep-in-the-story parts where I get visions of these absolutely come-look-at-me completely different stories. They try to tempt me from finishing the original story.
I take this as a Very Good Sign :)
hehe, thanks Merry! And thank you for visiting and commenting. :)
I was tickled when the idea came to me. It was the outgrowth of a character choice, so I got to thinking, why make things easy on the character? And so the new plot line was born. It's just what the latter fourth of my novel needs. :)
But I sure hear you about stories which want to distract away from a story! Those can be great temptations. What I do with them is to type out a description then save it in my "novel ideas" file! :-D
I'm reading all over the blogosphere blog fatigue. I'm sure it is an August thing, though my first blog started in August (end of July), but that's sort of the same thing, needing to start something new, like buying school supplies. Blogging is a diversion from book writing, at least for me. It seems so much easier for me. And fun. If you have to give one priority, of course it should be the novel. The purpose of the blog is to feed the novel. Right?
Hi, Squirrel! :) Great to see you. You are right -- for me, the blog feeds into the novel, as do my hikes. In fact, my hikes inspired the novel I'm working on right now!
But when I'm deep into the novel, the energy I have left over for blogging is less -- it's harder to write on my blog about writing when I'm deeply into writing! ;-D
Glad to hear all is going well with your book, 'Heart's Chalice'
I've just come back from a few days away and now I'm ready to start work on rewriting my book.
best wishes and a hot cup of tea.
Annie
Hi, Annie! Thanks for the tea. :) And for your kind wishes! I hope you had a good trip, and best of luck with your rewrites!
every blogger i know has slowed down over the summer months, so i don't feel quite as guilty about doing the same. good for you that this goes hand in hand with other writing progress!
Thanks, M.! Yeah, I've noticed the summer slow-down. Blogging will probably pick back up in the fall! And I'm happy to be getting so much done on my WIP. :)
