Thursday Thirteen #13

Thirteen Inconvenient Places / Times to Get Ideas for my Books

Wow, it's my Thirteenth Thursday Thirteen! In other words, it's TTT instead of TT for me this week. Cool Beans!

My previous post where I talked about keeping a notebook close at hand gave me the idea for this Thursday Thirteen. Yes, I keep notebooks close at hand, but that doesn't mean a notebook is always close at hand.

So I thought I'd list some of the places or times good ideas often whack me on the head for which I have, for the moment at least, scant opportunity to write 'em down.

1. Oh my, do I ever get good ideas in the shower. I wonder why? Perhaps the scalp massage when I wash my hair doubles as a brain massage, and the ideas just fall out? Who knows. But there's a problem with keeping notebooks near showers. Showers, of course, are wet, and wet paper doesn't hold up well. Thank goodness I manage to keep most of those good ideas lodged in my brain 'til I dry off and get to my notebook or to my computer (whichever is closest, and I'm tellin' you what's the truth: sometimes it's a mad dash!).

2. I also get good ideas while I'm driving in traffic, in situations which require my full attention. So although I keep a notebook in my purse, I can't take my eyes off the road to dig in my purse to grab the notebook, let alone to write in the blasted thing. Let's just say I've become highly proficient in the use of mnemonics as a memory aid.

3. I walk outside for exercise just about every day, but I don't bring a notebook on my walks because I don't want to carry a bunch of crap. I don't like feeling encumbered when I exercise. So it never fails that on my walks, my brain fairly bursts with ideas. Usually, I can remember them when I get home, but you'd think I'd accept the slight encumbrance and start carrying a notebook on my walks. T'would make things so much easier. Maybe one of these days.

4. Often, I get good ideas while wrangling the Ballicai (otherwise known as cats). And it's never convenient to find one's mind bursting with ideas for plot and character whilst scooping poop. Likewise, book ideas fall by the wayside when, at wet food time, the Ballicus Tabernacle Feed Me Choir bursts into song: "Hallelujah, Hallelujah! Momma's feeding us wet food! Meow, Meow, Now, Now, Yeah, Yeah!"

5. Another place I get good ideas is on the Hawg (Harley-Davidson). Riding a motorcycle is freeing, exciting, relaxing, and refreshing, all at the same time. So naturally it follows that Hawg-riding is inspiring as all get-out! But it goes without saying that while cruising down the road on a whee-cycle, the last thing I need to be doing is scribbling in a notebook.

6. I get some really bitchin' ideas while walking in the mountains with hubby. We live in the East Tennessee mountains and enjoy them at every opportunity. I keep a notebook in my purse, but on our sojouns to the mountains, I don't always take my purse.

7. There's something about target shooting at the range that makes good ideas bubble up in the old gray matter. Must have something to do with the concentration and focus needed to be a good markswoman. And I am quite good with a rifle. But sighting in a target isn't the ideal time to break my concentration and lunge for a notebook, hollering, "So that's how Isaac and Aphra are going to get out of that muddle..."

8. Another less-than-ideal time to get a break-through story idea is when I am covered in Ballicai (otherwise known as cats). It's often the case that I have a cat in my lap, a cat draped on my feet as they're propped on the desk, a cat sprawled against my elbow on the other side of my desk, and a cat lying in the floor on the very spot I would place my feet were I to get up from my chair. Ah well. I love being covered in / surrounded by cats, and hopefully, a good idea will keep.

9. Yet another less-than-ideal time to get a break-through story idea is hubby-cuddling time. And as I love hubby-cuddling time, hopefully the idea will keep, and if it doesn't... well, tough noogies.

10. Another challenging time to get novel-related ideas is while I'm cooking. Especially with four cats in the house. It's enough of a challenge to keep Marilyn MonREOW out of the mixing bowls, Chairman Mao out of the casserole dishes, Dorydoo out of the refrigerator, and all the while trying to keep from tripping over Brainball. It's a Cat Mom's life, but I love it.

11. Something about watering flowers makes good ideas pop into my head. Especially watering elephant ears. I don't know what there is about watering elephant ears that my brain finds so stimulating. Perhaps it's because they're big and cool-looking and they make my mind go "Whoa Nelly!" And while Whoa Nelly moments are conducive to creativity, I don't take my notebook along on flower-and-elephant-ear-watering rounds.

12. Housecleaning is no fun; alas it's gotta be done. And whether I'm cleaning the bathroom, folding laundry, scrubbing the kitchen counter, or sweeping the floor, I often have a cool story-related idea pop into my head, and it usually happens while I'm engaged in the part of the chore that's most difficult to just walk away from, i.e.: I've swept up a pile of debris, and if I leave to go find my notebook, Chairman Mao, spazzy little boykitty, will leap into the pile, scattering the stuff everywhere.

13. And going by my dreams that I remember, I know I get cool ideas for my stories while I'm sleeping. But those ideas are useless if they occur in the dreams I can't remember.

What I hate is when I get a good idea just as I'm drifting off to sleep. Then I have to get up and write it down, because if I don't, it's gone forever!

I seem to get great ideas while driving or sleeping. It seems so unfair.

Comparing your TT and my TT I'd say we manage 4 in common. Nice list :-)

My theory is... if I was meant to write about it, I'll remember it! :)

I get a lot of my writing ideas when I'm driving or mowing the lawn. Which is scary considering I should be paying attention to what I'm doing. I find I can shut my mind off and let my creativity start to play.

Most of those work for my ideas to. Not covered with ballicai, maybe Sumos and Boos. ;)

I would love to cruise on a Hawg (being a Harley Baby). That will have to wait!

Happy TTT TL!

You could become a geek and wear one of those ear bud things hooked up to a recorder....

The image of cats around you cooking was cute, 1/2 been there!

In many of those places a little tape recorder you could wear around your neck would be good.
I hope you remember and save all those great ideas!
Terrific Thursday Thirteen!
My TT is posted.
Have a wonderful day!
Happy TT'ing!

ha, you're the second person i've read who's written about this for T13.

re: #6 - best time! I love walking in the woods!

Going down the list, thinking check... check... check... especially the driving one. I am ALWAYS plotting while driving! And like bunnygirl, ideas arrive just as I'm dropping off to sleep, perfectly comfy... I know I should get up, but dangit, I'm sooooo comfy... surely I'll remember it in the morning, right?

Gene Bach said...

Dang, I wish I got as many good ideas as you do! LOL!

...and if all else fails read a few blogs and something will take hold.:)

I always get ideas in my sleep, but they're gone the minute I wake up. I remember that they were good ideas, but can I actually remember the idea?

Missy said...

I've worked out many plots while in the shower - staying focused until I get to paper or computer isn't usually a problem if the idea is really good or if it's something I've been struggling with for a while.

I am so going to invent a dream recorder. I wake up with some many questions about what I was just dreaming. While I'm at it I guess I could invent a little brain TiVo so you can rewind thoughts and think them over again. It will be great for taking exams.

Thanks for stopping by my Thursday Thirteen #35 13 Old Wives Tales Edition.

Hey TL,

Happy TT13!! It would have been my 13 too but I took a week off awhile back.

Re#1 -- go to a dive shop (as in SCUBA) and get a divers tablet - they work underwater with a little stubby pencil. Hang in on your shower wall and you'll never miss a brain burst!

Sounds like you have creative juices flowing all the time - anywhere, anytime. Mine mostly come in the car (I have been known to scribble in a notebook while driving - drive with the left hand, write with the right, praying you can read after you stop! :) Also, get lots of them during the night - but most of the time I don't wake up. And, when I do, I don't have anything to scribble on, and don't want to get up and disturb hubby!

Check out my TT

Joely Sue Burkhart said...

Oh, definitely, especially the shower and traffic. I've missed a turn before because I was story dreaming. For the walks, you might try a digital recorder instead of paper--although I'm afraid I would sound like a complete idiot if anyone overheard me.

I get inspired when I'm folding clothes, going for a long walk and taking a shower. I think it's because I have an opportunity to shut off my monkey mind and just be.

Great post - I'm all about beards & facial hair this time round. (No 8)

I get a lot of story or plot ideas from dreams. And I daydream a lot, too. :) Thanks for your visit and have a Happy TT!

Hey this is brilliant and you know what...it's a very good exercise because I think there is somethign revealed in here...that ideas must like being distracted...you see I think the imagination must flourish when our active minds...or egos are distracted...???

I found your list really inspiring and insightful !!!

Hey I wrote a list of questions I am very interested in for my TT list this week. It's like a mini-survey...I hope you have time or interest (and your visitors?) to stop by and help me out...I am curious! The questiona are about artwork in the home and art you like? And decor?

Here is my TT:

Great great list. Sometimes I need a moment and some places to think about what I should write in my blog. You've given me ideas!

:-)

Happy TT!

One of the best suggestions I've heard for writing ideas is to always carry an index card and pencil with you, in a pocket or wherever you can. It works wonders. I've been known to pull my car over when an idea hits just so I can get it down in time.

Tink said...

Haha, I can picture these occasions in my mind. Awkward, inconvenient, hilarious! *LOL*
My T13 is about posts without comments.

Coco said...

I usually get good ideas in the shower as well. Or as I'm drifting off to sleep like bunnygirl. It is really annoying when you have ideas but can't put them down... it usually gives me headaches! :(

Thanks for visiting my TT, btw!

Darla said...

The worst is when I'm getting a great idea just before falling asleep, so I write it down. And then when I look at it in the morning, it's either obvious or really, really stupid. I think I'd almost rather think "darn--I had this great idea, but I didn't write it down, so I lost it." :)

Jamie said...

Number 13 is a killer. What good is the world's greatest novel if you can't remember more than a slight first sentence if you're lucky 30 seconds after you wake up.

PJ said...

I'd love to ride a Hawg!

I think the brain feels more able to be creative when we're not focused on being creative...

I get inspired when doing housework, so I really should do more of it!

Nicole Austin said...

I get a lot of ideas when driving, so I got a little tape recorder to capture them. I hate it when I dream up a good idea then can't remember it long enough to write it down. Ugh!

Red said...

I dream good ideas for songs, but when I wake its patchy...

Nancy Lindquist-Liedel said...

I swear I'm going to buy a little voice recorder and start carrying it with me. I come up with more crap on a run, than I can remember.

Emma Wayne Porter said...

Over the years I've come to realize one thing: I will be beset by the best idea when it is least possible to write it down.

I'm a 'driver', too. Dunno what it is about getting behind the wheel but I can usually solve just about any story problem with an hour or so in the car. Unless the kids are with me, but that's another thing entirely.

Have a good day.

Ash said...

I get ideas doing the dishes. Which, I don't do that often. IE, not too many brillant ideas.
Great TT!

Shelly Kneupper Tucker said...

I'm with jennymcb, that you could have some kind of recording device. This was one of those lists with "universal appeal," because we all can relate! A new idea for a story to tell usually pops up when I'm standing in front of an audience trying to tell a different story! Makes it hard to talk.

L^2 said...

In the shower and on walks - yes, those are good idea times for me too.
Happy TTT! It's my 13th edition this week too. :-)

Arlene said...

I probably get my best ideas on my way to sleep! Great list :-)
I played too :-)

Thomma Lyn said...

Thanks so much, everybody, for visiting and commenting! And yes, I hear ya Bunnygirl -- I get ideas when I'm drifting off, too -- arrgh! :)

And yeah, the recorder thingie -- I might really want to look into that. Would be much easier than scribbling into a notebook and more convenient, too.

Kimo & Sabi said...

Yep - sometimes we is doing our "business" in the litter box and -BAM- a blog idea pops in our heads...we rush out to get da idea onto da blog, often fergetting to cover our "business product" in da box!

Thomma Lyn said...

*chuckling*, Kimo and Sabi! Y'know what, Chairman Mao does the same thing! :)

Gattina said...

Your case is really problematic, how to keep fresh ideas immediately for the eternity ? But I solved your problem. You buy a dictaphone it's small and handy, hang it around your neck and keep it always on "On" and not on "Off". If possible try to find one waterproofed for the shower. With a nice necklace in pink or whatever (fitting color to your clothes) it would look elegant and discreet. Then you can spit out your thoughts while jogging, cat feeding, showering, hubby cuddling etc. without any problem. The noises of heavy breathing, water running and meowing will probably give you supplementary ideas while listening to the ideas you had already. Isn't that a good idea ??

Thomma Lyn said...

LOL, Gattina! Now that's what I call a great idea! Problem is, there are more parts of my life that are quiet or even boring than are exciting and I'd probably wind up putting myself to sleep... ;-D

Sophisticated Writer said...

I get many ideas in the shower too! LOL Why is that? Yup, must be the brain massage.

Sadly, ideas seem to vanish when I dry off :(

I also get ideas exactly as you said in # 2, 3 and 13. I guess great minds think alike. Take care Thomma and keep writing ;)

Thomma Lyn said...

Thanks, Sophisticated Writer. :) And LOL @ ideas vanishing when you dry off!

A friend of mine keeps a mini tape recorder near, especially in her car; so that when she's caught in traffic or an idea strikes her at a stoplight, she can rattle off at least the core concepts for later memory-jogs.

I'm not sure what it is about showers. It's almost stereotypical. I do a lot of site planning and info organization when I'm in the shower. My least favorite time to get ideas, though, is just on the cusp of sleep. I get all excited about whatever concept it is, and then I can't get to sleep!!

Thomma Lyn said...

Ha, laughing muse! I get ideas just on the cusp of sleep, too, and then I have to snap awake and write them down or lose them -- and sometimes this happens numerous times a night before I can finally nod off.

Susan Helene Gottfried said...

How did it take me two extra days to visit you? I feel like a heel; you know you're one of my priority friends.

I have ideas in the shower, too. And at the gym; it's any place that my mind can wander and turn things over and ... marinate, almost, in what I'v got going on. If that makes any sense.

Thomma Lyn said...

Awww, thanks Susan *big smile*! You're one of mine, too. :) And what is it about the dang shower? I joke with hubby that I get good ideas in the shower often enough that I ought to stay in there all the time. ;-D

Annie Wicking and Loman Austen said...

I thought I was the only one who got them while I was a sleep... I woke the other day muttering an idea... hoping I could remember it before I woke right up...but before I could get pen to paper my much beloved spoke to me and it was gone...

best wishes,
Annie

Thomma Lyn said...

Hi, Annie! Yes, it's frustrating how ideas can be so hard to hold onto until you get them in tangible form.

Best wishes to you and yours! :)
