1. Jerusalem the Golden by Margaret Drabble -- a young woman's struggle to throw off the effects of her chilly, repressive upbringing. 2. Snow Flower and Secret Fan by Lisa See -- the story of two woman friends in nineteenth-century China. 3. Ishmael: An Adventure of the Mind and Spirit by Daniel Quinn -- how can I resist this one? One of the characters is a telepathic gorilla. 4. Zombie by Joyce Carol Oates -- Oates is a marvelous writer, and I'm curious to see how she handles the subject matter of this novel: she goes inside the mind of a serial killer. 5. Against the Day by Thomas Pynchon -- A doorstop of a book: 1085 pages! *whew*! 6. The Echo Maker by Richard Powers -- won the National Book Award for fiction last year: a man is involved in an accident, is in a coma for fourteen days, and awakens with a neurological disorder where he remembers his sister but when he actually sees her, he thinks she's an imposter. 7. Suttree by Cormac McCarthy -- McCarthy is an author from my neck of the woods, and Suttree is set in the town where I grew up: Knoxville, Tennessee. And he comes highly recommended by Mamalujo. 8. East of Eden by John Steinbeck -- one of those books I've meant to get hold of for a long time now but still haven't gotten around to it. I will, one of these days. 9. The Song of Names by Norman Lebrecht -- this was recommended to me by Wylie. Set during the outbreak of World War II, it's the story of two young boys who are classical musicians. 10. Gilead by Marilynne Robinson -- I've heard this is a gorgeously written book. It's written as a letter from an elderly, dying preacher to his young son. 11. Darkness Visible: A Memoir of Madness by William Styron -- a memoir about Styron's battle with depression. 12. The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven by Sherman Alexie -- I read his novel Reservation Blues last year and loved it. 13. American Gods by Neil Gaiman -- I'm currently reading his novel Neverwhere, and what a ride! Read Good Omens many years ago, and it rocked my world. Arrrgh! So many books, so little time. Oh my! I have never even heard of any of those books! Where have I been? I'm so caught up in my contemporary romance, that I find myself closed into the box. Afraid to step out. :) I need to grow some courage! ;)
Happy TT!
Yikes, I've never read any of these and heard of very few of them. Must read more!
Gilead and Snow Flower and the Secret Fan are excellent. I rated both 5/5.
Echo Maker and Ishmael are also on my list this year.
My TT#5 is on books, too.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan was one of my favorites of last year. You will want to look up foot binding on the internet to see exactly what it is.
And you are the second TT-er to mention the Echo Maker which my aunt just gave to me! Now I'm thinking of moving it to the top of the stack.
I just re-read East of Eden a few weeks ago, love it! The rest on your list I don't know so I'll have to check them out!
Thanks for visiting my kitties TT!
Sorry I can't comment on this, I don't know any book and if I would know it, the titles are different in french.
Thanks for posting this list! I've only read East of Eden. And, the only other one that I'm familiar with is Against the Day.
I am so glad that you did a book TT. I'm all about spirals this week. Spirals and photos!
Take care, XINE
I haven't heard of a lot of these. I've read #8 and 13.
Great list!
Hope I can read some of them.
Thanks for stopping by my Sunflower blog.
I will Exercise for Comments!

I like your selection of quotes on your blog.
Snow Flower and Secret Fan by Lisa See is about a fascinating period.
I have Snow Flower on my TBR mountain, too.
Your list is VERY literary; good for you! (I'm not a fan of literary stuff) Although I must confess that I wasn't thrilled with either American Gods or The Lone Ranger and Tonto... But your tastes are more literary than mine, so I bet you'll like them just fine.
Happy TT -- and happy reading!
the only book that I might hear of is the last one!!
I hate it now, cuz i use to be a big readers when I was younger, and with university, and then work and karate, I don't seems to find any time for reading!!!
A very ambitious list! Happy TT!
I plan on staying far... far... FAR away from the 1,000 word master piece *shiver*
But, Zombie does sound really interesting. I've got so many books to read though... and I need to spend some time just plain writing! :)
Happy Thursday!
Wow. Next to yours, my TT feel non-intellectual. HEHEHE
Stop by for some junk food:)
I've never heard of most of these, but East of Eden is on my TBR shelf.
# 2 sounds so awesome. I will have to look into that one.
Happy TT
So many interesting books, so little time! #2 & #4 sound awesome!
your #2 is #2 on my to-read list! ;)
A great list of books, I've written some down to my ever growing list as well. I really need to make time to read more.
A telepathic gorilla? I have got to read that one!
Great list, happy TT.
I've read Ishmeal... it is a lovely story.
We did not see "We Are The Kitties: Read This Or I'll Bite You:, written by the kitties of the cat blogosphere! Hmmpft! Well, you can get it here -

I have always wanted to read East of Eden. Saw the movie and promised myself to read the book. I'll add it to next year's list.
Thanks, everybody, for reading and commenting! Have a great weekend, one and all. :)
We is introducing Chairman Mao to the cat blogging world on Friday 3/2! Come drop by on Friday to sees the comments for him!
I haven't heard of any of them, but some sound pretty interesting!
Thanks for coming by and commenting, Crystal!
And hi, Kimo and Sabi! Thank you so much, and Chairman Mao thanks you, too. I'll let him know you guys are introducing him on your blog, and he'll be visiting over there shortly, and cat-chatting too, no doubt! :)
i love book lists! i haven't read any of these (yet) - but i think i'll put a link to this post on my book blog so i can come back when i'm looking for something new.
happy TT!
Thank you so much, Alison! Looks like you've got a great book blog, and I look forward to perusing it. :)
I appreciate you visiting and commenting, and have a great weekend!
I finished American Gods a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. Gaiman sucks you in and keeps you shaking your head at the audaciousness of his characters throughout.
Snow Flower and Secret Fan and Against the Day are on my "to be read" list too!
I should have a full review of American Gods up on my blog by the end of the month.
Thank you, Kim! I look forward to reading it. :)
