Thursday Thirteen #2

Thirteen Words and Phrases I Loathe

1. "We don't HANDLE that." (WELL, WHO THE %$@* DOES?! I've been transferred to twenty-five departments already, and the last one sent me back to you...)

2. value (As used without meaning on television commercials: a $750 value, yours for only $19.99.)

3. closure (It's become a cheap buzzword.)

4. chunks (Just sounds icky. Say it out loud. Now say it slowly. See what I mean? Ew.)

5. utilize (For the love of all that's fuzzy, just say use!)

6. issues (As in, "he/she has issues" -- too euphemistic for me. Just say what the matter is and get on with it.)

7. irregardless (It isn't a word -- it's a blight on the English language!)

8. like (When, like, used in everyday conversation, like, every few words, like, you know, it gets, like, really annoying.)

9. doodle (when used for a baby chicken -- just can't stand that one; it's a visceral loathing)

10. "But wait! Call in the next fifteen minutes..." (what, there's such an insatiable demand for pickle piddlers?!)

11. "new and improved" (A ridiculous construct. Something cannot be simultaneously "new" and "improved". If it's new, it's new. If it's improved, it can't be new because it existed prior to the improvement.)

12. quirky (Overused to the point it's become meaningless in most contexts.)

13. basically (Should be stricken from the English language as it serves no useful purpose.)

The purpose of the meme is to get to know everyone who participates a little bit better every Thursday. Visiting fellow Thirteeners is encouraged! If you participate, leave the link to your Thirteen in others comments. It’s easy, and fun! Be sure to update your Thirteen with links that are left for you, as well! I will link to everyone who participates and leaves a link to their 13 things. Trackbacks, pings, comment links accepted!

LOL #8 really drives me batty!!

Great list! A lot of those are definitely overused or misused! #5 can definitely be annoying.

Happy TT. :)

Hi, samantha and caylynn! Thanks for visiting and commenting, and Happy TT to you both! :)

I just love your list!
I think we are kindred spirits..lol
It also reminded me of this Seinfeld episode my son keeps playing over and over. Jerry answers the phone and some soliciter is trying to sell him a new phone plan. Jerry says wait, I am really busy right now why don't you give me your home phone number and I will call you back. The caller said Sir, we don't do that! Jerry says what? You don't want people calling you at home? The guy says umm no. Jerry says well now you know how I feel and hangs up...
Have a great Thursday!

Good list and I agree with what you said especially #5. Unfortunately I have a tendency to use 'like' a bit too often while speaking and I can't understand your dislike of basically. It's kind of an 'at the bottom level' or 'when you get down to it' which I find very useful :)

Thomma Lyn said...

LMAO, raggedy! :) When hubby and I are asked for our phone number at stores (we never give it out like that), we're tempted to ask the clerk, "Well, can we have yours?" And when, of course, she/her says "Heck no, what for?", we can say, "So we can call you at o'dark thirty and tell you our life stories!" *giggle*!

And thanks, Harley! Part of my dislike for "basically" is visceral, but I also find it redundant, sort of like the phrase "in fact." :) But then my favorite word in the English language is "globule", so I'm a bit odd, LOL!

Thanks, both of you, for visiting and commenting, and Happy TT!

Harley said...

Globule is good :) Glo-bewle.

Turnbaby said...

Great list and as a first time visitor I must say I adore the name of your blog.

My favorite is #4--I never thought about it but now---ewwwww.

Leigh said...

Hi thomma lyn

thanks for stopping by my place.

Good luck on your novel (and the next one).

Thomma Lyn said...

Thanks, turnbaby, and I'm so glad you visited! Yeah, c-h-u-n-k-s... just plain icky. :-D

Thomma Lyn said...

Hi, Leigh! Thanks so much for visiting, and for your best wishes! :)

Chickadee said...

Hehe. I don't like the words irregardless and utilize either. I also had "literally". People overuse that word.

Thanks for stopping by my 13!

Tink said...

I'm glad to say I don't use these 13 very often. Not at all for that matter. :-) If I do, feel free to correct me!
My TT is about the year 2007>

Wylie Kinson said...

OMG!! My in-laws say 'irregardless' ALL THE TIME and it makes me crazy because I don't want to correct them (I do that alot - correct my husband - and I know it's annoying to him)
Irregardless, they're, like family, you know, and basically, I love them... :)

Rashenbo said...

Tee He He HEEEE... pickle piddler :) What kind of shows are you watching? I also cringe when I hear irregardless. What really drives me batty... how Minnesotans use the word "borrow". Every where else in the US you borrow a pen from someone or someone loans you a pen.

Nope... here everything is borrow. "I borrowed her that book and she hasn't returned it yet." GAHHHHHH

I really enjoyed reading your list :D Although... I kind of like the word doodle. Thanks for visiting my list!

Thomma Lyn said...

Hi, Chickadee! Yup, I forgot about "literally." I don't like that one, either. :)

And I like your TT post, Tink -- very interesting reading!

And LOL, Wylie -- I know exactly what you mean, irregardless of irregardless! ;)

Thanks everybody for visiting and commenting.

Thomma Lyn said...

Hi, Rashenbo! Thanks for visiting and commenting!

Ha, I came up with "pickle piddler", in lieu of "turnip twaddler". ;)

And I hear you on "borrow" -- cracks me up how people say, "I want to borrow a piece of paper... borrow your bathroom..." How the heck do you borrow somebody's bathroom? *giggle*

Amy Ruttan said...

Uh Oh, I used irregardless the other day!

I HATE utilize as well.

Lisa said...

I love this! I nearly did a list on a similar topic. I've never heard of #9, thought, at least not used to describe a baby chicken.

Thomma Lyn said...

Hee, Amy -- for that I'll send one of my cats to jump up on your counter! ;)

And hi, Lisa! LOL, great minds think alike, huh?

Thanks for visiting and commenting!

Aimee said...

LOL!!! And as always, But wait, there's more!! :) That one actually makes me laugh, but it is also annoying. Thanks for visiting my TT.

Thomma Lyn said...

Hi, Aimee! Thanks for visiting and commenting. Yeah, hubby and I make fun of "...but WAIT!!" all the time. :-D

tiggerprr said...

I really can't stand the use of "irregardless". Great list! :)

Thomma Lyn said...

Thanks, tiggerprr! Thanks for visiting and commenting. :)

Christine said...

Fantastic list. Two other words that drive me nuts are just and nice. I use just too much and I hate that it becomes an instinct to type. And Nice tells you squat. :)

Angela/SciFiChick said...

For some reason, I dislike the word "moist." It just sounds gross.

Thomma Lyn said...

Hi, Christine! I agree, "just" is way overused, and "nice" is an annoyingly bland, non-specific word.

And LOL, Angela! I can't believe I forgot to include "moist" on my list. What an icky word! :)

Thanks, y'all, for visiting and commenting.

Stacie said...

I loved this...I have a few of the same words on my "bugs me like crazy" list! Great TT, I played too (Thanks for visiting!)

"Closure."
"At the end of the day..."
"Resources" (when referring to human employees...

See... your thirteen made me think. :)

Thanks for your sweet comment on my very first TT. This is great fun -- I'm hooked!

Thomma Lyn said...

Thanks, Stacie! You've got such a pretty blog -- your header picture is gorgeous.

Sunflower -- you know what, sunflowers are my favorite flowers!

And culinarily curious, you reminded me of another phrase I detest: human resources. Argh. Just... argh.

This TT stuff is fun, isn't it? I'm hooked, too. :)

Thanks, all of you, for visiting and commenting!

I love playing with language. It's kind of the same idea that I posted on this week.

Lisa said...

hahah a woman after my own heart! (I had to laugh at the "chunks" reference! I feel the same about the word crawlspace)

Most excellent (and newly improved, too!) 13!

Thanks for coming by Snarkypants. Have a great weekend.

Thomma Lyn said...

Hi, scribbit and Lisa! And hee hee, Lisa -- I'm with ya on "crawlspace." Doesn't have much of a ring to it! :)

Thanks to both of you for visiting and commenting, and have a great weekend. :)

Great list. #1 and #7 drive me absolutely batty. I think the only thing higher than those two words/phrases on my pet peeve list today would be the NLU (natural language) phone prompt system that my phone company uses. You're supposed to speak into it and it doesn't respond to pressing buttons. When you talk, it never understands what you say... *grrrrr*

Thomma Lyn said...

Hi there, she! Thanks so much for visiting and commenting.

Goodness, I've never heard of that kind of phone system -- that sounds extremely aggravating. Push-button phone systems are bad enough.

I hope you have a great weekend!

Joely Sue Burkhart said...

Oh, I so agree! Great list.

Thomma Lyn said...

Hi, Joely! :) Thanks so much for visiting and commenting.

Susan said...

Excellent idea for a TT and I'm right with you on all these - especially "basically" which drives me crazier than the rest because I seem to have developed a habit of using it myself and have no idea why! aaaaaaargh! (at least I don't do the "like" thing :) Thanks for visiting my TT!

mamalujo1 said...

Hey TL, is there any way to email you?

Thomma Lyn said...

Hi, Susan! Thanks for visiting and commenting. :) Another word I don't like is "actually", and actually I got into the habit of using it too often. ;)

And hi, mamalujo! You can email me at thommalyn at gmail dot com.

Tizzie said...

Definately my sort of list...I have the annoying habit of correcting my friends grammer and diction, because words are there to be used properly damnit!!!

Thanks for popping by.

Happy TT!

Thomma Lyn said...

Hi, Tizzie! Thanks so much for visiting and commenting. I also go nuts when I see signs and logos that are deliberately misepelled to be "cutesy" or for trademark purposes, LOL!
